1. 恢复焊区钝化膜:重建不锈钢表面富 Cr₂O₃ 防护层;
2. 抑制晶间腐蚀:消除敏化热影响区的贫铬晶界;
3. 降低内外表面粗糙度:减少颗粒挂壁与微生物附着;
1. 清渣去氧化皮:采用不锈钢丝刷或尼龙磨片清除焊渣、飞溅及厚重氧化皮,严禁使用碳钢工具;
2. 脱脂清洗:使用无硅、无氯清洗剂去除油污与机加工冷却液残留,禁用含氯溶剂以防点蚀;
3. 工装遮蔽:对密封面、螺纹及快插接口实施遮蔽,防止处理后尺寸超差;
l EP 单边去除量须严格受控,不得削弱管壁或密封面强度;
l 处理后内表面 Ra ≤0.8 μm、外表面 Ra ≤1.6 μm;
l 后处理流程:逐级去离子水冲洗(终水电导率 ≤1 μS/cm)→ 中和 → 超纯水终洗 → 洁净干燥;
l 处理后须复核密封面、螺纹及快插接口尺寸,确保落在图纸公差范围内。

Surface Treatment Technology and Process for Welded Manifold Piping
Abstract
The manifold is the core flow-distribution component of cold-plate and immersion liquid-cooling systems in data centers. It is fabricated from 316L/304L stainless steel by TIG or laser welding, and its internal channels directly carry deionized water–glycol coolant. The welding thermal cycle destroys the passivation film in the weld zone, induces intergranular chromium depletion, and degrades the surface finish—directly compromising long-term corrosion resistance, cleanliness, and zero-leakage reliability. This paper presents the core objectives and key challenges of post-weld surface treatment for manifolds, compares acid pickling passivation and electropolishing in terms of principles, application scenarios, and quality-control requirements, and provides an engineering reference for clean manufacturing of data-center liquid-cooling components.
Keywords: manifold; liquid cooling; post-weld surface treatment; pickling passivation; electropolishing; cleanliness control
1. Technical Application Background
Driven by the continuous surge in AI computing density, data-center cooling is shifting rapidly from traditional air cooling to liquid cooling. As the "vascular hub" of the liquid-cooling system, the manifold distributes coolant uniformly to every rack and cold plate; the surface condition of its internal channels directly determines flow resistance, particle shedding, ion leaching rate, and long-term operational reliability.
A typical manifold is fabricated from 316L or 304L stainless-steel tubing and plate by TIG or laser welding into an integrated multi-channel structure, which inevitably leaves heat tint, weld spatter, internal burrs, and chromium-depleted bands in the heat-affected zone. Post-weld surface treatment must achieve four objectives:
1. Restore the passivation film in the weld zone by rebuilding the Cr₂O₃-rich protective layer;
2. Suppress intergranular corrosion by eliminating chromium-depleted grain boundaries in the sensitized heat-affected zone;
3. Reduce internal and external surface roughness to minimize particle adhesion and microbial attachment;
4. Control long-term particle shedding and ion leaching to meet leading customers' requirements of helium leak rate <1×10⁻⁹ mbar·L/s and particle cleanliness <50 μm.
Depending on the customer grade and application scenario, two technical routes are available: acid pickling passivation and electropolishing.
2. Core Challenges of Post-Weld Surface Treatment
Post-weld surface treatment of stainless steel is by no means a trivial "pickling-and-done" operation; it involves several coupled challenges.
2.1 Removal of weld oxide scale and heat tint
TIG welding involves high heat input, forming blue-gray to dark-brown oxide layers on the weld bead and heat-affected zone, composed mainly of Fe₃O₄, Cr₂O₃, and spinel-type complex oxides. These layers are dense and tightly bonded to the substrate, making thorough removal by conventional pickling difficult.
2.2 Intergranular corrosion susceptibility
When the 304L/316L heat-affected zone dwells in the 450–850 °C sensitization range, Cr₂₃C₆ precipitates along grain boundaries and depletes chromium, rendering the material highly susceptible to intergranular corrosion in chloride-containing environments. Post-weld oxalic acid etching per ASTM A262 Practice A is mandatory to confirm the absence of grain-boundary grooves.
2.3 Free-iron contamination control
During machining and welding, tool iron particles and carbon-steel grit may embed in the surface, creating free-iron sites that rapidly initiate pitting and rust stains in the coolant environment. Carbon-steel brushes and ordinary steel-wire tools are strictly prohibited throughout the process, and final verification by the potassium ferricyanide blue-spot test must confirm no free-iron residue.
2.4 Internal cleanliness and particle control
Manifolds feature complex internal geometry and long, narrow flow channels; residual acid, metal chips, and abrasive particles after treatment would circulate indefinitely in the liquid-cooling loop, potentially blocking cold-plate microchannels or contaminating the coolant. Final rinsing must use deionized water (conductivity ≤1 μS/cm) with particle counting to meet ISO 16232 / VDA 19 cleanliness requirements.
3. Surface Treatment Process Schemes
3.1 Pretreatment: post-weld cleaning and protection
Pretreatment is the prerequisite for effective passivation or electropolishing and must be completed in the following sequence:
1. Slag and scale removal: remove weld spatter and heavy oxide scale with stainless-steel wire brushes or nylon abrasive pads; carbon-steel tools are strictly prohibited;
2. Degreasing: remove oil and machining-coolant residue with silicone-free, chloride-free detergents; chloride-containing solvents are banned to prevent pitting;
3. Masking: mask sealing surfaces, threads, and quick-connect fittings with dedicated tooling to prevent dimensional deviation after treatment;
4. Internal inspection: visually confirm the absence of metal chips and visible foreign matter in internal channels.
3.2 Scheme A: acid pickling passivation (standard)
Acid pickling passivation is suitable for general industrial-grade liquid-cooling manifolds. Its core function is to remove surface free iron and chromium-depleted oxide layers, regenerating a Cr₂O₃-rich passivation film on the stainless-steel surface. The process is performed in accordance with ASTM A967 and ASTM A380, followed by thorough deionized-water rinsing to neutrality and clean hot-air drying. After treatment, the appearance should be uniformly silver-white or matte, free of rainbow heat tint, rust spots, and acid residue. Low capital investment and fast cycle time make this route the preferred choice for standard service conditions.
3.3 Scheme B: electropolishing (EP, premium)
Electropolishing is recommended for manifolds serving leading customers, high-cleanliness applications, or long-life designs. EP employs a specialized acid-based electrolyte to perform microscopic electrochemical leveling of the workpiece surface. Unlike mechanical polishing, EP dissolves microscopic peaks while simultaneously removing the surface deformed layer, yielding a semi-mirror to mirror finish. Key process controls:
l The unilateral EP removal amount must be strictly controlled without compromising tube-wall or sealing-surface strength;
l After treatment, internal surface Ra ≤0.8 μm and external surface Ra ≤1.6 μm are required;
l Post-treatment sequence: cascaded deionized-water rinsing (final water conductivity ≤1 μS/cm) → neutralization → ultrapure-water final rinse → clean drying;
l After EP, the dimensions of sealing surfaces, threads, and quick-connect fittings must be re-verified to remain within drawing tolerances.

(Huaqing Hi-Tech Surface Technology R&D Center) provides full-process service capability from post-weld pretreatment and pickling passivation to electropolishing, offering an integrated solution of "process review—scheme design—processing implementation—inspection & verification—quality delivery" for manifolds of various cleanliness grades.
The full-process route is as follows:
1. Process review and scheme design: based on the material (304L/316L), welding method (TIG/laser), internal geometry, and cleanliness requirements, determine the pickling passivation or electropolishing route and acceptance criteria;
2. Post-weld pretreatment: remove weld spatter and oxide scale with stainless-steel-specific tools, strictly avoid carbon-steel contamination, and perform degreasing and decontamination checks;
3. Pickling passivation or electropolishing: standard industrial-grade projects follow ASTM A967/A380; premium cleanliness projects follow ASTM B912/ISO 15730, with focused control of coverage and time parameters in internal channels and weld corner zones;
4. Multi-stage DI-water rinsing and drying: multi-stage deionized-water rinsing removes residual acid and ionic contaminants, followed by nitrogen-purge drying to ensure a dry, particle-free internal cavity;
5. Inspection and verification: supporting tests include the potassium ferricyanide blue-spot test, roughness measurement, rinse-water particle counting, ion leaching (ICP-MS), intergranular corrosion (ASTM A262), and helium mass-spectrometry leak detection, with complete process and inspection reports;
6. Packaging and delivery: internal nitrogen protection, port sealing, and clean packaging to prevent secondary contamination during transport.
Advantages: full-process in-house implementation with single-point accountability and traceable process records; technical support from the R&D center covering materials and corrosion mechanisms; and a quality system combining full inspection of first articles with batch sampling, ensuring manifolds consistently meet high-cleanliness, low-ion-leaching, and stable passivation requirements.
4. Key Quality Control and Acceptance
Acceptance of manifold surface treatment must cover seven dimensions: appearance, free iron, roughness, particle cleanliness, ion leaching, intergranular corrosion, and helium leak rate, as detailed in Table 2.
Table 2 Key quality characteristics and acceptance criteria

Rework management: if pickling passivation or electropolishing fails, one rework cycle is permitted to avoid wall-thickness loss and cumulative sensitization from repeated treatment.
Packaging: after treatment, internal channels must be thoroughly dried and ports cleanly capped; components are packed in dust-free clean packaging to prevent secondary iron contamination or particle introduction during handling and assembly.
5. Typical Application Scenarios
1. Data-center liquid-cooling manifolds: cold-plate and immersion cooling distribution piping, supporting PUE <1.1 efficient heat dissipation and 7×24 h uninterrupted operation;
2. Energy storage and storage-container liquid-cooling systems: battery-pack cooling distribution piping requiring extremely low ion leaching to ensure battery safety and cycle life;
3. Hydrogen energy and fuel-cell cooling: bipolar-plate and stack cooling loops with zero tolerance for chloride and sulfate residues;
4. Semiconductor ultrapure-water systems: high-cleanliness fluid distribution piping requiring internal Ra ≤0.4 μm, where electropolishing is mandatory.
6. Conclusion
Post-weld surface treatment of manifolds is the critical process that elevates data-center liquid-cooling systems from merely "functional" to "reliable, long-life, and high-cleanliness". Pickling passivation economically restores the passivation film and removes free iron for standard industrial requirements, while electropolishing achieves low roughness, high cleanliness, and superior passivation simultaneously through microscopic electrochemical leveling—representing the upgrade path for premium liquid-cooling components. Hefei Huaqing Hi-Tech offers full-process capabilities spanning post-weld pretreatment, pickling passivation, and electropolishing, with flexible process selection tailored to customer grade, cleanliness requirements, and budget, delivering stable, compliant, and traceable surface-treatment solutions for stainless-steel welded piping in data-center liquid cooling, energy storage, hydrogen energy, and related fields.
